Reaching Mombasa and Checking into Severin Sea Lodge

Just as we made it to the outskirts of Mombasa, the road got really bad. Actually, the road was bad all the way to Mombasa. When we got there, it got worse. I mean, it was like riding on a rumble strip for about a mile. The traffic is impossible to explain. There were so many vehicles trying to pass each other that we got bottle-necked when there was only one lane!

The dust and fumes in the air was suffocating. The temperature increased along with the humidity, reminding us that it’s the hot season in Kenya. And that we were at the coast.

But I was so enthralled at what I saw, I [as best as I could] didn’t notice the heat and noxious gases polluting my lungs. Well, actually it was blazing hot, I was sweating [the only one at that], I couldn’t breathe, I was getting restless and impatient, I wanted to smash windows out of the matatus clogging the roads…

And then we reached Mombasa.

Najwa Makes Her Dewey Beach Debut

What to do for Labor Day weekend? Reminiscing about last year’s trip to the beach, I wasn’t so sure if I wanted to take Najwa back, but Nduku is a sucker for sun, sand and ocean. So off to the edge of the country we went.

The trip started off as perfect as we could’ve asked for. Najwa slept the entire way there. Lately she’s been practicing for her terrible twos, elevating her tantrums to ear-piercing shrieks for no reason and throwing things and hitting and I’m so glad she hasn’t learned how to bite yet.

Najwa’s First Trip To The Beach

David Gaines and Najwa Gaines at Rehoboth Beach in DelawareWhen Najwa was 3 months old [maybe 4] giving her a bath was like subjecting her to waterboarding. Maybe the water’s too hot? Not hot enough? Maybe all babies let out bloodcurdling screams when the water touches their bare bottoms?

If Nduku ever wanted me to do something, all she had to do was say we were about to give Najwa a bath. “Wash the car? I’m on it.” “Watch more reality TV? We can DVR it and rewatch it after it goes off.” “Vote for a Republican? It is secret, right?” Standing pat while torturing Najwa with a bath was a bit more than I wanted to bear so early into fatherhood.
